Intimate part

Wikipedia

An intimate or private part is a place on the human body. The term is a euphemism.

Definitions vary, but in Western cultures they are approximately the parts involved in sexual arousal, reproduction|procreation, and elimination of feces and urine including:

  • the anus, the perineum, and (to a lesser extent) the buttocks

  • for males: the penis and the scrotum

  • for females: the vulva and (to a lesser extent) the breasts

In some periods of Chinese history (ending in the early 20th century), female foot binding made the feet private parts.

In some periods of European history, female shoulders and legs were included. More conservative viewpoints in the West in some contexts find it appropriate that females should clothing|cover their shoulders, particularly when entering a church or other sacred space.

In Islamic traditions, the definition of intimate parts is similiar to their definition in Western culture. A significant proportion of Muslims believe, however, that females should cover most of their body, especially the hair, shoulders, and neck. It is often stated that these parts are likely to arouse excitement in males, and for reasons of chastity and modesty, should be covered. However, this may not necessarily comprise "intimate" or "private parts," insofar as stimulation is visual and not tactile.

Exposure of one's intimate parts, particularly unintended exposure, is connected with feelings of shame and may be subject to strict Sociology|social rules, social control and criminal justice. (See nudity and indecent exposure.)

Touching the intimate parts of another person, even through clothing, is often associated with human sexual behaviour|sexual intent. If this is done without legally valid consent of the person, it may be considered sexual harassment or sexual assault.
