  2. Vitamin B1 or Thiamine: It is found in foods such as legumes, nuts, yeast, whole grains, Cereal Grains and meats. Severe deficiency of this vitamin is rare in the United States and is observed in areas of the world where there is food shortage. This vitamin plays an important role in the proper functioning of the nervous system and therefore it is prescribed in disorders and diseases of the nervous system such as anesthesia treatment, burning, falling asleep or tingling sensation in the fingers and toes for various reasons including diabetic Neuropathy. Some doctors also recommend Thiamine to enhance memory and reduce forgetfulness in Alzheimer’s patients, to help quit alcoholism, and to prevent painful menstruation syndrome in 12 to 21 year-old girls.
  3. Vitamin B2 or Riboflavin: Riboflavin is found in foods such as milk, meat, eggs, nuts, fortified flour and vegetables. This vitamin is essential for the proper growth and function of all body cells, especially the brain, blood, gastrointestinal mucosa and skin cells. Some doctors prescribe supplements to treat a variety of ailments, including acne, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Burning feet syndrome, Muscle Cramps, and Migraine Headaches, proving its effectiveness needs further research.
  4. Vitamin B3 or Niacin: Found in foods such as meat, fish, yeast, milk, eggs, legumes, cereals, and vegetables. Poor nutrition and alcoholism can cause this deficiency in the body. High-dose vitamin supplements (more than one or two grams per day) are prescribed to reduce blood cholesterol and triglycerides. Although the list of uses of this vitamin is very varied and includes things like acne treatment, allergies, hair loss, alcoholism and asthma, further clinical trials are needed to prove its effectiveness.
  6. Vitamin B6 or Pyridoxine: This vitamin is found in many plant and animal foods. Deficiency of this vitamin can lead to some kind of anemia. Supplements of this vitamin appears to be effective in reducing morning nausea in the early months of pregnancy and in premenstrual syndrome symptoms in women.
  7. Vitamin B7 or Biotin: This vitamin, also known as vitamin H, is found in many foods. As the daily intake of this vitamin is very low, it’s deficiency is also rare. However, this vitamin is widely used to treat hair loss and nail brittleness, which has not been proven effective in scientific research.
  8. Vitamin B9 or Folic Acid or Folate: Since 1998, this vitamin has been added to serial, flour and bread, pasta and cakes based on the US government order. It is also found in many fruits, vegetables and animal foods. Folic acid, iron and vitamin B12 have an interactive effect on the digestive system, and there must always be a balance between them in foods, otherwise the body will malfunction. An important complication of folic acid deficiency is anemia. For pregnant women or women who plan to become pregnant, folic acid supplements are usually prescribed to prevent birth defects.
  9. Vitamin B12 or Cobalamin: Normally found in animal foods including meat, poultry, fish and dairy products and less in vegetarian foods. Vegetarians (vegan) are usually advised to take vitamin B12 supplements daily if they do not consume adequate amounts of fortified foods.
