Ketogenic Diet

On a Ketogenic diet, a person consumes very low sugar nutrients with enough protein and high in fat for growth. In fact, the theory behind this diet is to create a diet in relation to fasting or hard workout without negatively affecting body growth.

Cell fuel and energy production for cells

When you consume a nutrient, your body digests and absorbs it, making chemical changes and delivers nutrients to cells in various ways. This complex process is called “metabolism”. In the meantime, your liver has an important role to play in these complex processes.

In general, there are three types of nutrients that are metabolized daily by the body: sugars or carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. These substances are metabolized in the liver and used to produce the energy needed by the body’s cells. In the meantime, sugars and then fats make the most of energy production. Proteins have less role in producing energy for the cells of the body. A regular daily diet should be adjusted to provide the above percentages of any type of sugar, fat and protein.

ketone bodies

Under certain conditions, such as fasting or someone who has not had access to food for a long time, the body begins to alter its metabolism with the help of cells and the liver, which is to use fats as a major source of energy instead of sugar causing body to become lean. Fats in the liver are transformed into smaller units called fatty acids, and byproducts are also called ketone bodies.

If your body is exposed to stressful conditions such as heavy exercise, fasting, illness, or prolonged starvation, fats and proteins start to break down and are used as a source of energy. Loss of protein can damage the body’s growth and health.

There are 3 types of Ketogenic diet:

1. The standard ketogenic diet, which uses very low sugar (5%), high fat (75%) and moderate protein (20%) and is the most common type of ketogenic diet.
2. The Targeted Ketogenic Diet is a diet that is suitable for athletes and allows them to increase their dietary sugar or carbohydrates during times close to competitions or heavy sports activities.
3. Another type of ketogenic diet allows one to increase their carbohydrate diet only on certain days of the week. This diet is known as the periodic ketogenic diet.
